Mahjong solitaire is the tile-matching puzzle most people picture when they hear "mahjong" online — a stack of decorated tiles laid out in a pattern, which you clear by removing pairs of identical tiles. The rules

A tile can only be removed if it is free: nothing sits on top of it, and at least one of its long sides (left or right) is unblocked. You select a free tile, then select a second free tile bearing the same symbol. The pair vanishes. Repeat until the board is empty or no moves remain.

Why boards get stuck

The trap is matching a pair too early. If one of those two tiles is the only partner for a tile buried deeper in the stack, removing it strands that buried tile for the rest of the game. Strategy

• Free the top layers first. Every upper tile you remove unlocks options beneath it. Clearing downward keeps the board open.
• Work from the outside in. Edge tiles are often the only partners for interior tiles, so removing edges early can isolate the centre.
• Check for uniqueness before matching. Before you pair two tiles, glance at whether either is the sole remaining partner for another tile. If it is, save it.
• Clear four-of-a-kind in pairs. When four identical tiles are free, removing two pairs back-to-back rapidly opens the centre without risking a stranded tile.

Using hints and undo

Most layouts offer a hint button and unlimited undo. Use undo freely while you learn — it lets you test whether a match was safe by seeing what it opens up. Hints are best saved for the endgame, when the board is nearly clear and a single stuck tile is all that stands between you and a win.
